Legendary Vehicles Are Now Legal Commanders in Magic: The Gathering

A New Rule for Commander

A major rule change has arrived for Magic: The Gathering’s Commander format. Starting now, legendary Vehicles are allowed to be your commander. This update expands what’s possible in the format and gives players new ways to build fun and flavorful decks.

What’s the Update?

Until now, Vehicles could only serve as commanders if they were also creatures—either by default or by transforming into one. With this change, any legendary Vehicle with a printed power and toughness can be used as your commander, even if it isn’t a creature in the command zone.

This rule also applies to the new Spacecraft cards introduced in the upcoming set, Edge of Eternities. These cards behave like Vehicles and can become creatures during the game using a new mechanic called Station.

How the New Rule Works

  • Only legendary Vehicles and Spacecraft can be used as commanders.

  • They must still follow normal color identity rules.

  • In the command zone, the card is treated as a non-creature artifact.

  • You can cast it like any other spell, and once it’s on the battlefield, you can Crew or Station it to make it a creature.

  • If it leaves the battlefield, it can return to the command zone just like any other commander.

Why the Change Was Made

This update supports new cards from the Edge of Eternities set, where Spacecraft play a central role. These cards function a lot like vehicles and are meant to lead decks. The change also helps make better use of legendary vehicles from past sets, which have often been popular but unused as commanders.

Allowing legendary artifacts with power and toughness to lead a deck gives players more freedom and encourages more variety in Commander gameplay.

What This Means for Your Decks

This update gives players many new choices. Legendary Vehicles that couldn’t be used as commanders before are now legal. Cards like Weatherlight, Esika’s Chariot, and Skysovereign, Consul Flagship can now lead your deck.

You’ll also be able to build around mechanics like:

  • Crew – tapping creatures to animate Vehicles

  • Station – a new way to power up Spacecraft

  • Artifact synergies – working with cards that benefit from lots of artifacts

Vehicles Worth Exploring as Commanders

Some exciting options for new commanders include:

  • Jackdaw – A strong draw engine in artifact-heavy decks.

  • The Belligerent – A good fit for treasure-making and pirate-themed builds.

  • The Indomitable – Offers consistent card draw for mono-blue decks.

  • The Falcon – A graveyard-friendly option in mono-black.

  • RMS Titanic – Generates treasure and can be a big threat on the battlefield.

  • Parhelion II – Finally usable as a commander in a Vehicle-themed deck.

Commanders That Support Vehicles

Although legendary Vehicles are now legal commanders, many of the best Vehicle-focused decks may still rely on non-Vehicle leaders like:

  • Greasefang, Okiba Boss – Recurs Vehicles from the graveyard.

  • Kotori, Pilot Prodigy – Gives Vehicles lifelink and makes crewing easier.

  • Edward Kenway – Combines Pirates, Vehicles, and card advantage.

What Comes Next?

Expect to see new Vehicle and Spacecraft commander decks at events like MagicCon, and more support for this theme in future sets. This rules update opens the door for more design flexibility and creative deck building.

It’s a small change with a big impact—perfect for players who love to build around cool cards and unique strategies.
