On July 30 at Gen Con 2026, Wizards of the Coast closed out its D&D keynote with a teaser that stopped the convention floor cold: Darth Vader and three words—"Season of Rebellion." Star Wars is officially coming to Dungeons & Dragons in late 2027, as the centerpiece of D&D's new Universes Beyond crossover line.

The two biggest names in tabletop imagination, finally at the same table. We've been running D&D nights at Saga long enough to know exactly what this means: every player who ever argued about whether a Jedi is just a monk with extra steps is about to get their answer—officially.

What Wizards Actually Announced

Here's the confirmed picture, stripped of hype. The reveal came at the end of the D&D Vision Keynote at Gen Con in Indianapolis: a brief teaser showing Darth Vader alongside the phrase "Season of Rebellion." The release lands in late 2027 under D&D Universes Beyond—a new crossover imprint borrowing its name (and its playbook) from the wildly successful Magic: The Gathering line that brought us The Lord of the Rings, Final Fantasy, and Star Trek.

The Vader imagery and the word "Rebellion" strongly suggest the Galactic Civil War era—the original trilogy's war between the Empire and the Rebel Alliance. But Wizards has confirmed neither the setting nor the format. What we do know: Star Wars isn't the first test of the line. That honor goes to Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft, arriving November 2026—so by the time Star Wars hits, the Universes Beyond formula for D&D will be battle-tested.

Why This Is Bigger Than a Licensed Book

Star Wars has had tabletop RPGs before—great ones. West End Games' d6 system in the '80s literally shaped Star Wars lore (that's where a lot of Expanded Universe detail was born). Wizards themselves published a d20 Star Wars RPG in the 2000s, and Fantasy Flight's Edge of the Empire line still has die-hard tables today. But none of those had the reach of modern fifth-edition D&D—the biggest tabletop RPG player base in history, with rules your whole group already knows.

That's the real story here: the on-ramp. When Star Wars runs on the system, tens of millions of people already play, "Want to try a Star Wars campaign?" stops being a pitch for a new game and becomes a pitch for this Saturday. For a store built around getting people to the table, that's the best kind of release there is.

Rumor Radar: Is Star Wars Coming to Magic, Too?

Let's be crystal clear before we have any fun: Wizards of the Coast has not announced a Star Wars Magic: The Gathering set. Everything in this section is community speculation—the kind we love to argue about at the counter, and exactly that. But the tea leaves are genuinely interesting, so let's read them together.

Why the rumor mill is spinning:

The licensing wall just came down. For years, the assumption was that Disney would never let its crown jewel share a card frame with anyone. Then the D&D deal happened—proof that Lucasfilm and Wizards can do business at the highest level. Once that door is open for one Wizards property, the community's question writes itself: why not the other one?

There's precedent for the leap. Universes Beyond on the magic side has already gone from video games to Middle-earth to Marvel to Star Trek, which hits shelves this November. A galaxy far, far away is arguably the single biggest IP left on the board. And Magic's crossover sets have consistently been its biggest commercial swings—if you were Wizards, wouldn't you be making that call?

The honest counterweight: Wizards' announced Magic slate is public well in advance, and Star Wars isn't on it. Nothing for 2026. If it ever happens, the earliest realistic window the rumor community points to is 2027 or beyond — and "points to" is doing heavy lifting in that sentence. One viral post claiming a 2026 Star Wars Magic set turned out to be an April Fools' joke that keeps getting re-shared as news. Don't fall for screenshots of "leaked cards."

When Can You Actually Pre-Order?

Straight answer: not yet, and not just at Saga—nowhere. We've checked with every one of our distributors, and Wizards hasn't solicited a single Star Wars × D&D product to the retail channel. For a late-2027 release, that's completely normal; product details and retailer solicitations typically come months ahead of launch, not a year-plus.
