The best entry point is a deck you can shuffle and play the same day. Riot’s Champion Decks are built around one League champion, for example Jinx or Viktor, and each comes with a full-size paper playmat, a foldable paper deck box, a rules and deck-building guide and a booster pack to start customizing. Riot notes each deck includes several rare cards and a clear path to upgrade as you learn.
Riot has also released Showdown Decks, which put two decks in one box so two people can sit down and play right away. According to Riot, a Showdown Deck includes two full 56-card decks, two booster packs, two full-size paper playmats, two paper deck boxes and a rules guide. Riot’s Proving Grounds set is a starter option designed for two to four players, with four champions and acrylic champion figures. Riot’s official description of a booster pack is 14 cards, with commons, uncommons and rare-or-better slots. The Vendetta set, for example, includes a foil slot and a slot that can hold a token or a rune. Exact slots vary by set, so treat the breakdown as typical rather than fixed. A display (sometimes called a booster box) holds 24 packs, which is why it’s the choice for players who want to build several decks, share packs at game night or chase a full set.

What are Riftbound runes, and do I need to buy them?

Short answer Runes are the resource cards in a separate 12-card rune deck. Every deck needs them, and deck-builders often keep spares on hand. |
In Riftbound, runes are not part of your main deck. Per Riot’s rules, a constructed deck is a 40-card main deck (including your chosen champion), a Champion Legend, three battlefields and a separate deck of exactly 12 runes. Each turn you bring out two runes and use them to pay for your cards. Runes must match the domains of your Legend, so in practice most decks use one or two rune types.
If you build your own decks, a bulk runes box saves you from hunting for basic runes each time you swap a Legend. Retail listings describe the bulk box as 54 of each of the six rune types, 324 runes in all, in a reusable storage box.

Are Riftbound playmats and sleeves worth it?

Short answer Yes, once you have a deck you enjoy. Sleeves protect your cards, and Riot’s tournament rules ask for identical, opaque-backed sleeves, so a matching set is worth having if you plan to play in events. |
A playmat gives you a defined space for your battlefields and looks great with champion art. Sleeves keep your cards clean during shuffles, and art sleeves let you show off your favorite champion.
