Wizards of the Coast just announced big changes to Magic boosters for 2027, starting with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, the first Magic set of the year. Play Boosters are renamed Booster Packs, God Packs debut in both Booster Packs and Collector Boosters, Japan Showcase cards move into the wildcard slot, and foils shift toward rares and mythic rares.

Sets released before Nauctis aren't affected. Universes Beyond sets are expected to get God Packs starting in 2028. Here's what you need to know.

What's Changing at a Glance

"Play Booster" is now "Booster Pack." Wizards is clear: this is a name change, not a new product. Our listings still say "Play Booster Display" for now — same product line.

God Packs Explained

God Packs are ultra-rare packs loaded with rares and mythic rares, found in both Booster Packs and Collector Boosters starting with Nauctis.

Booster Pack God Pack (about 1 in 1,000 packs):

• 10 non-foil rares/mythics
• 2 non-foil Booster Fun rares/mythics
• 2 foil Booster Fun rares/mythics
• 1 celebration card

Collector Booster God Pack (about 1 in 300 packs):

• 5 foil Booster Fun rares/mythics
• 3 foil default-frame rares/mythics
• 3 non-foil Booster Fun rares/mythics
• 1 foil land
• 1 celebration card

What It Means for You

If you draft or play sealed: Losing the guaranteed foil won't change how you build — and Japan Showcase cards showing up in the wildcard slot adds some fun variety to the pool.

If you crack packs to collect: Japan Showcase in Booster Packs and better foil rare/mythic odds are real upside. The trade-off: foil commons and uncommons are gone from Booster Packs, so if you chase foil playsets or build a foil Cube or Pauper deck, Collector Boosters are now the way to get them.

If you play Commander: Booster Packs stay the everyday way to crack rares and mythics, with a God Pack as a once-in-a-blue-moon thrill. Collector Boosters remain the premium pick for foils and Booster Fun treatments.

When Do These Changes Start?

Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, the first Magic set of 2027, is where it all begins. Universes Beyond sets are expected to get God Packs starting in 2028.

Nauctis Play Booster Displays are on pre-order now, along with 2027's Kamigawa: Titanbreach and Zhalfir. Not sure which box is right for you? Check our Magic buying guide.

FAQ

No. The changes start with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm.

When do God Packs start?
With Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, in both Booster Packs and Collector Boosters.

Wizards expects Universes Beyond God Packs starting in 2028.

What happens if I open a God Pack at a draft or sealed event?
WPN stores are guided to remove the God Pack from the event and replace it at no charge, so the event stays fair. Ask our staff how we handle it at Saga events.

Can I still get foil commons and uncommons?
Not in Booster Packs from Nauctis on. Collector Boosters still include them, with two fewer foil commons and one fewer foil uncommon per pack.
