Dragon Shield Matte Clear, Standard Size: the most-stocked sleeve on our shelf.
|
★ The quick answer Are Dragon Shield sleeves worth it? Yes, for most players. Dragon Shield sleeves are polypropylene, and the brand says most standard-size sleeves are 120 microns per layer (240 per sleeve), which gives them a firm feel and staying power through weekly play. Pick Matte for the toughest everyday sleeve, Dual Matte when you want a fully opaque back in light colors, Standard Size for Pokémon, MTG, Lorcana and One Piece, and Japanese Size for Yu-Gi-Oh!. |
Dragon Shield has been making card protection since 1999, when the brand began in the back room of a Danish game store. Today it’s a go-to at our tables for Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, One Piece, Disney Lorcana and Yu-Gi-Oh! players alike. This guide answers the questions we hear most at the counter, with straight answers first and the detail underneath.

Are Dragon Shield sleeves worth it?
|
Short answer Yes, if you play the same deck regularly or protect cards you care about. They’re thick, consistent, come in a huge range of colors, and the Matte line in particular has a strong durability record in independent testing. |
- Material: Dragon Shield sleeves are made of polypropylene, which the brand chose for durability.
- Thickness: Dragon Shield says most of its standard-size and Japanese-size sleeves are 120 microns per layer, meaning 240 microns for a full sleeve.
- Shuffle feel: the textured Matte back is described by Dragon Shield as “smooth yet controlled.”
- Choice: Dragon Shield’s own site lists more than 30 Matte colors, plus Dual Matte, Classic, Non-Glare and art lines.
- Quality control: the brand says every sleeve goes through quality checks for durability, strength and a consistent look and feel.
The honest trade-off: they cost a little more than bargain sleeves, and no sleeve lasts forever. If you’re sleeving bulk or a deck you’ll play twice, a basic sleeve is fine. For a deck you shuffle every week, Dragon Shield is a very safe bet.

What’s the difference between Dragon Shield Matte and Dual Matte?
|
Short answer Same textured back and clear front, different inside. Matte is one color throughout. Dual Matte uses a second color for the interior and, according to Dragon Shield, is fully opaque even in the lightest colors. Matte is the more durable of the two in independent testing. |

|---|---|---|
| Back | Textured matte, one color | Textured matte, two colors (back + interior) |
| Front | Clear | Clear |
| Opacity | Dark colors are opaque; lighter colors can be slightly see-through | Fully opaque backing, even in light colors (per Dragon Shield) |

| Durability | Held up very well over 1,000 shuffles in an independent test | Began splitting around 300 shuffles in the same test |
| Saga price (Standard, 100 ct) | $7.99 | $9.49 |
| Best for | Everyday play, Commander, darker colors, heavy shufflers | Light or pastel colors, competitive play, foil-heavy decks |
Durability figures come from an independent review by Double Sleeved (UK), not from Dragon Shield. Opacity and shuffle-feel descriptions are Dragon Shield’s own.

How do I double-sleeve with Dragon Shield?
|
Short answer Card goes top-first into a Perfect Fit inner sleeve, then bottom-first into your regular sleeve, so the openings face opposite ends. Press the cards flat to push out trapped air. |
- Inner sleeve: slide the card top-first into a Perfect Fit inner sleeve.
- Outer sleeve: slide the inner-sleeved card bottom-first into your regular sleeve. Dragon Shield suggests pressing down lightly on the Perfect Fit so it doesn’t slide as you insert it.
- Settle the air: lay the finished cards on a flat surface and press down with your hand to push trapped air out.
- Triple-sleeve (optional): add a clear outer sleeve over the top with its opening facing the opposite way to the regular sleeve.
Sideloading Perfect Fits are quicker to load, but Dragon Shield notes they give a little less protection than toploading. Sealable Perfect Fits have a flap that tucks behind the card for the most secure fit.

How do I pick a Dragon Shield sleeve color?
|
Short answer Pick a darker Matte or any Dual Matte if you want your card backs fully hidden; pick a color that matches your deck’s identity so you can spot it at a glance; and use a different color for each deck you own. |
- Opacity first: lighter Matte colors can be slightly see-through. If you love pastels, go Dual Matte or add a smoke-backed Perfect Fit inside.
- Match the deck: green for a Pokémon Grass deck or MTG forests, red for aggro, blue for control. It makes pulling the right deck from your bag instant.
- One color per deck: if you run several Commander decks, distinct colors keep them from getting mixed up at the table.
- Buy a spare pack: a backup pack lets you replace worn or split sleeves with an exact match later.

Do Dragon Shield sleeves split? How long do they last?
|
Short answer Any sleeve can split eventually. In an independent 1,000-shuffle test, standard Matte held up very well while Dual Matte began splitting at around 300 shuffles. If you shuffle hard every day, Matte is the tougher choice. |
Dragon Shield doesn’t offer a warranty on its sleeves, but it does take quality complaints through its website if a pack isn’t right. A few habits help any sleeve last longer:
- Keep your deck in a deck box between games rather than loose in a bag.
- Riffle or side-shuffle gently; hard mash-shuffling is what stresses sleeve seams most.
- Press double-sleeved cards flat after sleeving so trapped air doesn’t strain the seams.
- Check your deck before an event and swap out any sleeves with splits, scuffs or marks.
- Classic (glossy) sleeves scratch more easily than Matte, so they benefit most from a deck box.
Dragon Shield vs Ultimate Guard: which is better?

How many card sleeves do I need for my deck?
|
Short answer One 100-count pack of Standard Size sleeves covers a 60-card deck for MTG, Pokémon or Lorcana with room for a sideboard or spares. A 100-card Commander deck uses the whole pack, so grab a second one for replacements. Yu-Gi-Oh! players need Japanese Size, which comes 60 to a pack. |
| Game | Deck size | Sleeve size | Dragon Shield packs |
| Magic: The Gathering – Commander | 100-card deck | Standard | 1 pack of 100, plus a spare pack |
| Magic: The Gathering – 60-card formats | 60-card deck + up to 15-card sideboard | Standard | 1 pack of 100 |
| Pokémon TCG | 60-card deck | Standard | 1 pack of 100 |
| Disney Lorcana | 60-card minimum deck | Standard | 1 pack of 100 |
| One Piece Card Game | 50-card deck + 1 Leader | Standard | 1 pack of 100 |
| Yu-Gi-Oh! | 40–60 Main Deck + up to 15 Extra + up to 15 Side | Japanese | 1–2 packs of 60 |
MTG sleeves, Pokémon card sleeves, Lorcana sleeves and One Piece sleeves are all the same Standard Size, so one sleeve line works across every game you play. If you double-sleeve, buy a matching pack of Perfect Fit inner sleeves for each pack of outer sleeves.

Dragon Shield sleeves FAQ
Are Dragon Shield sleeves worth it?
For most players, yes. Dragon Shield sleeves are made of polypropylene and the brand says most of its standard-size sleeves are 120 microns per layer (240 microns per sleeve), so they feel firm and hold up to regular shuffling. They cost a little more than bargain sleeves, and no sleeve is split-proof, but for a deck you play every week they are a dependable pick.
What is the difference between Dragon Shield Matte and Dual Matte?
Both have a textured matte back and a clear front. Matte is one color throughout, so lighter colors can be slightly see-through. Dual Matte pairs two colors, one for the back and one for the interior, and Dragon Shield says the backing is fully opaque even in the lightest colors. In one independent 1,000-shuffle test, Matte proved more durable while Dual Matte began to split sooner.
What size Dragon Shield sleeves fit Pokémon cards?
Standard Size. Dragon Shield Standard Size sleeves fit cards up to 63 x 88 mm, which covers Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, Disney Lorcana, One Piece, Flesh and Blood and Grand Archive.
What size Dragon Shield sleeves do I need for Yu-Gi-Oh!?
Japanese Size. Dragon Shield Japanese Size sleeves fit cards up to 59 x 86 mm, which is the smaller format used by Yu-Gi-Oh! and Cardfight!! Vanguard. Japanese Size packs hold 60 sleeves.
Do Dragon Shield Standard Size sleeves fit One Piece and Lorcana cards?
Yes. One Piece Card Game and Disney Lorcana cards are standard-size cards, so Dragon Shield Standard Size sleeves (and Standard Perfect Fit inner sleeves) fit them.
How thick are Dragon Shield sleeves?
Dragon Shield says most of its standard-size and Japanese-size sleeves are 120 microns per layer, or 240 microns for a full sleeve (front plus back).
Do Dragon Shield sleeves split?
Any sleeve can split eventually. In an independent 1,000-shuffle test by the UK reviewer Double Sleeved, standard Matte held up very well while Dual Matte began splitting at around 300 shuffles. If you shuffle hard every day, Matte is the tougher choice. Dragon Shield does not offer a warranty but accepts quality complaints through its website.
Are Dragon Shield Dual Matte sleeves opaque enough for tournaments?
Dragon Shield says Dual Matte has a fully opaque backing, even in the lightest colors, which is why many competitive players choose it. As with any sleeve, keep your deck in one matching set and replace worn or marked sleeves before an event.
How do you double-sleeve with Dragon Shield Perfect Fit?
Slide the card top-first into a Perfect Fit inner sleeve, then slide it bottom-first into your regular outer sleeve so the two openings face opposite ends. Press the finished cards flat on a table to push out trapped air.
Why do my new Dragon Shield sleeves feel puffy or slippery?
Double-sleeved cards can trap air; Dragon Shield recommends laying them on a flat surface and pressing down to push it out. Classic (glossy) sleeves can also feel slippery when new and develop grip as they are played.
How many Dragon Shield sleeves are in a pack?
Dragon Shield Standard Size Matte, Dual Matte and Classic sleeves come 100 to a pack. Japanese Size sleeves come 60 to a pack. One Standard pack covers a 60-card deck with spares, or exactly one 100-card Commander deck.
Are MTG sleeves and Pokémon card sleeves the same size?
Yes. Magic: The Gathering and Pokémon cards are both standard-size cards (63 x 88 mm), so the same Standard Size sleeves fit both. Lorcana and One Piece cards use the same size too. Only smaller Japanese-size cards such as Yu-Gi-Oh! need Japanese Size sleeves.
