The T'au Empire represents something unique in the grim darkness of the far future: hope. A relatively young spacefaring civilisation built on cooperation, technological advancement, and the philosophy of the Greater Good, the T'au are proof that not everything in 40K has to be ancient, corrupt, or consumed by war. They chose it — and they are very good at it.
The T'au fight through superior technology and coordinated fire support. Their soldiers, the Fire Warriors, form disciplined battlelines and engage enemies from range while Crisis Battlesuits jump in, unleash a devastating volley, and retreat before the enemy can retaliate. Pathfinders paint targets with markerlights, improving the accuracy of every weapon in the army. It is a faction built on teamwork and precision.
On the tabletop, T'au Empire is a shooting-focused army that wins by controlling range and eliminating high-value targets before they can reach you. Their melee is genuinely weak, which means learning to use terrain, movement, and Markerlights effectively is essential — but deeply rewarding when it comes together.
Is This Army Right for You?
- You want to win through superior firepower and long-range shooting rather than melee
- You love the sci-fi aesthetic — the T'au range features mechs, drones, and sleek futuristic designs
- You enjoy a strategic, thinking-person's playstyle that rewards positioning and coordination
- You want an army with some of the most visually dramatic centrepiece models in the game — the Riptide is stunning
Playstyle & Strengths
Spotters and Shooters: Pathfinders spot targets for the rest of your army, so every gun that follows hits harder. Coordinating your spotters and shooters is one of the most satisfying puzzles in 40K.
Crisis Battlesuits: Jump in, shoot, jump back. Crisis Battlesuits hit hard, are customisable with different weapon loadouts, and their manoeuvrability makes them incredibly frustrating for opponents to catch.
Ranged Dominance: T'au weapons consistently outrange most of their opponents. If you play correctly, you can spend entire games shooting at things that cannot shoot back.
Iconic Centrepiece Models: The Riptide, the Ghostkeel, the Hammerhead — T'au have some of the most visually striking centrepiece models in the game. A well-painted T'au army is genuinely jaw-dropping on the tabletop.
How to Build Your First T'au Empire Army
