New Mechanics, Explained
Here's everything Wizards confirmed today, in plain English:
Beam Me Up
Some spells can be cast again from your graveyard — return a creature you control to its owner's hand and pay an extra cost. Think of it as beaming a crew member back aboard to get the spell one more time.
Face a Dilemma
Whenever you choose one or more modes on a spell or ability, you're "facing a dilemma" — and some cards reward you every time you make that call.
Federation
An ability word that counts how many different creature types you have among your non-Borg creatures. A diverse crew makes these cards hit harder.
Strange New Worlds
Counts how many differently named lands you control. It pairs with the set's 10 common Planet lands, which enter tapped and gain you life — explore more worlds, get more value.
Assimilate
Resistance is futile. Assimilate puts a creature onto the battlefield under your control as a Borg artifact creature, replacing its other creature types.
Spacecraft & Station (returning)
Back from Edge of Eternities. Tap creatures to put charge counters on a Spacecraft; once it has enough, it becomes an artifact creature with extra abilities.
Commander-only: Battlefront & Seek Out
- Battlefront — perks based on how many opponents you attack in a combat.
- Seek Out — a bonus whenever you draw your second card in a turn.
Cards Revealed in Today's Debut
Here are today's standouts. We'll add more as the gallery fills in.
|
★ The Saga crew's top 3 from the debut
1. Borg Cube: it steals a creature, then assimilates it onto your side every time it attacks. Your Commander table will feel this one.
2. Kobayashi Maru Scenario: the famous no-win test, turned into a card that makes you lose if you can't get rid of it. Pure flavor.
3. Signed Headliners: cards hand-signed by the actors, a first for Magic. Every Collector Booster is now a lottery ticket.

Captains & Crew
- Captain Jonathan Archer — tap Archer and pay G to give another creature +X/+X until end of turn.
- Captain Pike, Fullness of Time — power and toughness equal to the number of differently named lands you control (Strange New Worlds in action).
- Seven of Nine — draw a card whenever you choose a mode on a modal spell.
- Jean-Luc Picard, Luminary — whenever you draw your second card in a turn, put a +1/+1 counter on a creature and two charge counters on a Spacecraft.
- Worf, Defiant Commander — from the Klingon Fury deck; exile cards from your library equal to the number of opponents you attacked and play them until your next turn.
- Khan, Vengeful of Heart — revealed during the stream; we'll add details once the gallery shows the full text.
Ships & Places
- Borg Cube — exiles a creature when it enters, then assimilates it onto your side when the Cube attacks. Yes, it keeps happening.
- D-7 Battle Cruiser — at three charge counters it makes a 2/1 Klingon Warrior each combat; at eight or more it becomes a 3/3 flier.
- Starfleet Academy — pay five and tap for one mana of a chosen color per creature type you control.
- The Holodeck — revealed during the stream; full details coming.
Spells & Scenarios
- Kobayashi Maru Scenario — an enchantment where you pick a different one of four effects each turn… and lose if you can't get rid of it after four turns. The no-win scenario, perfectly captured.
- Open Communications — a one-blue-mana spell you can cast again from your graveyard with Beam Me Up.
- Deep Space Scan — draw a card for each differently named land you control.
- Hit It! — ramp plus haste for your creatures.
From the July First Look
Still on the board from the original First Look: mythic captains Captain James T. Kirk and Captain Kathryn Janeway, the multi-rarity U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Galaxy-Class, Highly Illogical, Salt Vampire, Crystalline Entity, Dr. Beverly Crusher, Lower Decks favorites Brad Boimler and Beckett Mariner, and Borg Queen, Perfection Manifest.
Booster Fun & Signed Headliners
This is where collectors should pay attention. For the first time ever, Magic is putting real actor signatures on cards.
- Signed Headliners — seven cards hand-signed by William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Kate Mulgrew, LeVar Burton, Brent Spiner, Jeri Ryan and Ethan Peck. Fewer than 250 of each, randomly inserted in Collector Boosters.
- LCARS frames — The Next Generation's computer-interface look, including all 10 shock lands in LCARS frames.
- Classic Enterprise — Original Series-style treatments on Kirk, Uhura, Spock and more.
- Klingon frames — including Klingon Script versions with card text written in Klingon.
- Schematics — blueprint-style Spacecraft, featured in the Beam Me Up Bundle promos.
- Stardates — 30 classic Magic cards reimagined with Star Trek art, like General Picard, Earth Warlord (Kenrith), Leonard McCoy, Country Doctor (Bristly Bill), Spock, Mirror Malefactor (Prosper) and Academy on the Bay (Minamo).
- Scene cards — 25 borderless cards that link into four panoramic scenes, plus two Scene Boxes.
- Surge Foils return across a range of cards.
Commander Decks
Each deck comes with 31 rare and 2 mythic rare new-to-Magic cards. Wizards reveals one full deck per day, and we'll add each one here the day it drops.
