Hogwarts Battle — the base game, and the spine of this entire guide.
Harry's birthday is July 31st, which means the annual re-read has just started in a lot of houses. If you'd rather do something at a table than on a couch, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle is the one we recommend more than any other licensed game we carry — and this year we finally have the base game and both major expansions on the shelf at the same time.
It's a co-operative deck-builder. You each play a student, you build a deck of allies, spells and items across seven progressively harder games, and you either hold the castle or you don't. The genius of it is that game one teaches a five-year-old how deck-building works, and game seven will beat adults.
Below: the whole Potter shelf, sorted by what it's actually for — the campaign, the party pick, the puzzle, and the thing you protect your cards with.

The one thing people get wrong Charms & Potions and Monster Box of Monsters are expansions. They add cards and new mechanics to Hogwarts Battle — they contain no base rules and cannot be played alone. If you're buying a gift and you're not sure the recipient owns the base game, buy the base game. |

The Long Game Where a Potter game fits at Saga |
We stock this shelf for one specific reason: Hogwarts Battle is the game that gets a nine-year-old to understand deck-building without anyone calling it deck-building. That kid is a Magic or Lorcana player in three years, and they got there through a book they already loved.
It's the same idea behind our building and STEM shelf—meet people where their imagination already is, then hand them something that makes them think. We've been calling that raising the next generation of nerds, and it's a big part of what we're building this year. A puzzle at seven, Hogwarts Battle at nine, a real strategy game at thirteen.

Younger reader in the house? The 550-piece World of Harry Potter puzzle at $7.99 is the softest possible entry point—and our puzzles & STEM shelf is where a lot of our families start before they ever buy a board game. |

Questions Before you buy |
|
What age is Hogwarts Battle really for? The box says 11+. In practice a reading seven- or eight-year-old plays game 1 happily with an adult; by game 6 the difficulty is real for everyone. |
|
Do the expansions need the base game? Yes. Both Charms & Potions and Monster Box of Monsters are expansions and require Hogwarts Battle. |
|
Which expansion should I get first? Monster Box of Monsters ($23.99). It's the gentler add and comes first chronologically. Charms & Potions is the harder, later one. |
|
Is it co-operative or competitive? Fully co-operative. Everyone wins or loses together, which is why it works so well across mixed ages. |
|
What's the best Potter gift under $15? The Lotería at $14.99 for a group, or the 550-piece puzzle at $7.99 for one person. Both are complete gifts on their own. |
|
Do you have other houses in the deck box line? We currently have the Gryffindor Boulder 100+ in stock—one copy. Ask us and we'll check what the next Ultimate Guard order can bring in. |
|
The Third Space Come play a hand of game one 35 S Van Brunt St, Store D, Englewood NJ. Hogwarts Battle's first game takes about twenty minutes and teaches itself — come in and we'll deal it out before you decide. |
Happy belated birthday, Harry. See you at the table.
